The Vortex: The Dark Knight Rises, John Carter and More

I’ve decided to debut a new column here on Professionally Incoherent, something I’m going to call The Vortex. You might be familiar with my other returning segments like “Professionally Incoherent Recommends” or “YouTuber Spotlight”, and The Vortex is going to be little bit different. Each entry will be a collection of some cool tidbits (movie and TV news, leaked images, Internet memes, etc.) I’d like to share with you that aren’t extensive enough to merit a full article here on the blog.

Today’s Vortex includes some new material from the production of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, a trailer from Andrew Stanton’s new sci-fi film John Carter, a behind-the-scenes video for the upcoming CBS drama Person of Interest and more. Check it all out after the break, and leave your reaction to any or all of the stories in the comments!

Lots of information from The Dark Knight Rises has been leaking out over the past few weeks – set photos, news of the teaser trailer premiering in front of the latest Harry Potter movie, even which type of car Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) will be driving. Here’s the new teaser poster that was released several days ago:

I love this highly symbolic one-sheet. The negative space between the crumbling buildings of Gotham City forms the Bat-symbol, implying that the self-destructive nature of the city literally “creates” Batman again, or in other words, brings Batman out of retirement. It also refers back to one of the posters for The Dark Knight, with the flaming floors of a high-rise also forming a Bat-symbol.

We learned that Bruce Wayne will be getting a replacement Lamborghini in this film: a 2012 Lamborghini Aventador, in place of the Murcielago he smashed up in the last film (I still wince when I see that scene). Check out this on-set shot of the car below:

Set photos have revealed that there will be some awesome set pieces in TDKR, including a skydiving scene and a return to Wayne Manor:

Also, I found a trailer for Andrew Stanton’s in-progress sci-fi film John Carter:

The film takes place on the planet Mars seemingly in the far future, with the titular hero, an American Civil War veteran, being transported to the surface of Mars to become the saviour of the human population living there. Andrew Stanton will be a good man for the job, considering he mixed science fiction with a heartfelt story in his last film, WALL-E. In John Carter, it looks like we have some high-concept sci-fi mixed with fantasy and swordfighting – should be fantastic!

I tweeted this out earlier, but Entertainment Weekly ran some new images from the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. I’ll post two below, and click here to go to EW’s page to see them all.

I just about lost it when I saw the first trailer for CBS’ new Fall 2011 show Person of Interest, starring Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ) and Michael Emerson (Lost). The show follows Caviezel’s character Reese, a former CIA agent, as he becomes a vigilante for the mysterious Mr. Finch, a billionaire with a machine that can predict violent crimes. Reese seeks out crimes before they happen and tries to stop them. This is easily my most-anticipated show of the fall. Check out this behind-the-scenes video from Person of Interest:

I have some more trailers for you, courtesy of the Apple Trailers site. Click on each link below to check them out!

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The sequel to Guy Ritchie’s 2009 film takes Holmes and Watson across Europe as Holmes matches wits with his archenemy: Professor Moriarty. This trailer looks great; all kinds of rapid-fire editing (one of Ritchie’s trademarks) and steampunk-esque visuals. I loved the first movie, and I’m super excited for this one.

Immortals. A Tarsem Singh-directed sword & sandal picture set loosely around the Greek myths of the hero Theseus (Henry Cavill). I’ve been curious about this one for a while, but the trailers released so far seem to indicate an overly effects-heavy film with too much resemblance to Clash of the Titans and 300. It might be worth watching, though, to see Henry Cavill in a role before he appears as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

The Three Musketeers. The latest film version of Alexander Dumas’ novel, starring Luke Evans (soon to be seen in Immortals and The Hobbit), Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich and Logan Lerman. This will either be a pleasant confection or laughably bad; there are far too many implausible additions (the flying warship, anyone?) and silly action film tropes like Jovovich’s “power slide” in a 18th-century dress.

Finally, it appears that “Owling” is the latest version of “Planking”, an Internet meme built on images of people lying flat as boards in odd places. Owling works in the same way, but those involved pretend to be an owl, crouching on cubicle walls and the like. The first few images of both “hobbies” struck me as funny, but I think this will get old really fast. Check out this Know Your Meme article for more on Owling.
